Why Masonry

Why is Masonry the Right Choice For Designers?

The Nebraska Masonry Alliance works with the architectural community to innovate the design of masonry structures, to improve education and skills development for masons, and to enhance safety training for both masons and the industry as a whole. See why masonry is one of the world’s safest, most sustainable and most versatile forms of construction.

Safety

  • Materials used in masonry, such as bricks and stones, can increase the thermal mass of a building and protect it from fire.
  • Masonry is non-combustible.
  • Masonry walls are more resistant to projectiles, such as flying debris from storms, or acts of vandalism or violence.

Sustainability

  • Masonry can last up to 500 years, or even longer, as compared to the 30-100 year lifespan for structures of steel or reinforced concrete.
  • Masonry structures retain their temperature better than other structures, which can mean significantly reduced energy costs.
  • Concrete masonry materials can be reclaimed for future projects
  • Masonry requires no paint or adhesives that need to be reapplied and impact air quality.
  • There is less waste involved in masonry than in most other forms of construction.

Versatility

  • Masonry projects do not have prohibitive construction needs such as large equipment or space requirements.
  • The finished look of a masonry project is limited only by the imagination. Designers can achieve their desired appearance by varying the size, shape and color of the materials, the pattern of the bond, and the surface finish (i.e. brick, stucco, glass, stone, etc.).
The Value of NMA

“It’s great having access to the wealth of knowledge that exists within the NMA. I reached out to Linda Potter (NMA President) with a question about wall flashing in a masonry wall, and within minutes she got me in touch with a mason who had the answer.”
